Memorial Day 2022

An 1868 a "Memorial Day Order" was given by John A. Logan, Commander in Chief - who designated that: " The 30th day of May, 1868 is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land."

Initially it was called Decoration Day.

Congress recognized it under that title as a federal holiday in 1938, and the name “Memorial Day” became commonplace after World War II. The federal government didn’t officially adopt that new name until 1967.

In 1971, federal law would change the observance of the holiday to the last Monday in May to create a three day weekend, and extended the honor to all soldiers who died while serving to preserve freedom.

What's the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?

Memorial Day is intended to commemorate those who laid down their lives for U.S. national defence.

Veterans Day honours all who have served their country.
