Montague's 1st Woman Mayor has died
Mrs. Emma “Emmy” Masset of Montague, NJ - longtime resident of the area died Sat., July 26th at 91 years of age.
"She was a very active person in her community over the years. She was a member of St. James the Greater RC Church in Montague, NJ where she also served as President of the Rosary Society.
She was the Montague Elementary School PTA President and a Past School Board Member.
She was a Montague Township Committee Member
and was elected the first Woman Mayor of Montague Township. She was on the Sussex County Planning and Zoning Committee."

Miss Montague, Mina Lin, was the recipient of the People's Choice award. Miss Lafayette, Sophie Schaeffner, is the 2025 Queen of the Fair. The 1st runner-up title was awarded to Miss Newton, Danielle Penny, followed by Miss Sandyston, Aubrey White, 2nd runner-up.
A most unfortunate tragedy!
Montague mourns the loss of Thomas Brislin, who often amazed children under the persona of Lucky the Hobo, as he performed while showcasing his exceptional talents as a balloon sculptor, juggler, and magician at children’s parties, and at gatherings such as Montague Day, & other events.
His concern for others is what led to his untimely death, as when he found a tree fallen onto Route 23. Knowing it was in a bad location, where a car may not stop in time, he decided to begin clearing it off the roadway.
A car, rather than slowing down, sped up and hit him.
A visitation will take place on Tuesday 7/29 from 1 to 5:00PM at Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home at 154 East Main Street, in Port Jervis NY 12771.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00AM at St. Mary's RC Church 48 Ball Street, Port Jervis.
Pennsylvania Dept. of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR) announces that the Delaware River is Pennsylvania’s 2025 River of the Year!

80th Anniversary of Liberation
of Auschwitz-Birkenau Death Camp
Shares the evolution of the site..which initially housed Polish political prisoners - those who voiced anything against the invading Germans. They included members of the Polish Scouting movement, who often assisted Polish Freedom fighters.
It was as time progressed, that anyone that was found undesirable would be brought here - where some where subject to experiments. Slowly it evolved to becoming a dreaded death camp. One speaker tells that 7000 Polish Christians were killed there, as well as gypsies, etc.
For history not to repeat - we must listen to what the survivors speak of. Some were only 5 years old, when they witnessed things firsthand.

As this was a bad year, in many locations in town that were not identified as sections that got sprayed, here's some info:
**Gypsy Moth Suppression**
If you think you are having an infestation of gypsy moth, please visit the NJ Department of Agriculture’s Gypsy Moth Suppression website at https://www.nj.gov/agriculture/divisions/pi/prog/gypsymoth.html for more information.
Information is available including an Gypsy Moth Suppression Q and A section as well as information specifically for homeowners. The Suppression Program is not operated on a local level but through the State Department of Agriculture, conducting aerial defoliation and ground egg mass surveys.

Q: What can a homeowner do to be included in the Department’s Cooperative Gypsy Moth Suppression Program?
A: Since there are certain legal and fiscal requirements for participation in the aerial spray program, the Department can only work with local municipal governments. However, when a municipality requests an egg mass survey, we send Department inspectors to the municipal building to pick up a map and request locations of complaints of gypsy moth damage. The homeowner can play an active role in this process by requesting that your municipal officials ask the Department for a gypsy moth egg mass survey and filing a written complaint about the location of these gypsy moth infestations with your municipality by early September. Follow up this letter with another request in late December to determine if your area was indeed included in a spray block and if your municipality is participating in the cooperative program.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated as a day to pay tribute and honor those currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Thank you to the men and women who proudly serve.

" In the United States, Asian Longhorned ticks have been collected from the environment in Pennsylvania that were positive for the causative agents of Lyme disease and Anaplasmosis, however, more research is necessary to determine its impact to human health. Investigation into their capacity to acquire and transmit pathogens is ongoing.
Livestock (cattle) in the United States can become infected with Theileria orientalis Ikeda parasite from the Asian Longhorned tick. This parasite resides in the animals’ blood and can result in sickness or death of the animal."

They're Back!!!
A black nymph of the Spotted Lanternfly has been spotted in town. These will progess in size, and then be red nymphs before their final winged stage.
They do not sting or bite, but can be very destructive to many crops, trees and plants.
Their most preferred host plant is Ailanthus or tree-of-heaven and will also feed off Rose (cultivated and multiflora); Grape (wild and cultivated); and these trees: Black walnut, Butternut; River birch ; Willow; Sumac; Silver/red maple.
They are also a devastation to hops and viniculture plants (beer and wine crops!).
The lanternfly makes an egg mass by excreting a sticky substance over it that causes the growth of black sooty mold.
